2021 Highlights

2021, where has the time gone?

Over at STAN HQ we’ve been feeling reflective. It’s been a strange couple of years for everyone, and the pandemic has really affected Student TV. The stations that have still been able to operate over the last academic year have been phenomenal and we’re hoping to see more stations get back up and running over the next year!

STAN has changed over the last year, Emma Bew stepped down from Chair after 2 years and I was delighted to step up into the role. Emma’s still on the committee, but having welcomed their first child this year - Emma and Rob both understandably needed to step back a bit for the time being! We’ve recruited 2 more committee members, welcome to Rowan Johnson and Josh Edwards. And are still looking for another person to join our team (get in touch!).

Our activities have been online focussed this year, we’ve kept up our virtual interactive quizzes and hosted a CV workshop. Our Alumni Spotlight strand has continued into 2021, where we ask alumni to share their stories and how student television has helped them in their careers. Our database is now up and running, and we’re encouraging all alumni to sign up on the website. The vision for our database is to have all alumni sign up with their contact details to create a directory of people who can be called upon to get involved with NaSTA and the alumni community.

At the Salford NaSTA conference, we as a committee had the privilege of judging the last award for Freshers’ Coverage, and were able to put the hosting team in touch with alumni to judge a number of other categories. Nik Rahmel and Josh Edwards went to Salford to represent us and awarded the prize to the thoroughly deserving StagTV, with GUST winning highly commended. It’s brilliant to see how stations have adapted to the changing circumstances and have still been able to create fantastic content.

Whilst at Salford, Nik and Josh were able to present to the NaSTA delegates, explaining the role of STAN and putting forward our vision for the next year. We’ve got some exciting plans coming up in 2022 including a mentoring programme, and looking forward to the next conference in York!

If you want to get involved with STAN, please get in touch with us at alumni@nasta.tv or follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook!

Cheers,

Kayleigh
