Ben Croucher is a current broadcast journalist for BBC Sport and Loughborough Students’ Union Television (LSUTV) alumnus. With the skills that he learnt doing student media, he was able to progress quickly within the world of TV. After graduating and working in local radio, he made the move to Manchester to work for BBC Sport and Radio 5 Live. In order to make the transition into TV, Ben was able to impress with his experience gained through student television such as camera operating, presenting, producing VTs and TV shows.
The monthly programme Loughborough Gold was one of the successful projects that Ben produced whilst at university. Mentioned in our LSUTV Spotlight, the show focuses on the best sporting action happening in Loughborough. He told us that, “the creativity and knowledge of every aspect of TV production mimics exactly what happens in the industry so I'm indebted to LSUTV and the volunteers and friends around me who helped make it possible”. I mean, how different can presenting live at Loughborough be to presenting live at the Olympics, right?
Having studied Sport Science with Management, Ben always knew that he wanted to break his way into journalism. His studies complimented his experience at LSUTV and helped him to find his way into the industry. Ben says that, “It's a testament to the quality of Loughborough University and LSU Media that so many alumni have not only made a successful career in the industry, but become leaders in their field in front and behind the camera.” Praising the access to industry standard equipment and wide range of opportunities, he believes that it gave him a real head start.
As a member of the Student Television Alumni Network, Ben is a great advocate for student TV. Having been a judge and a guest at recent NaSTA Award shows, he regularly contributes to our community and we hope to see him back again soon!
